Good morning. It's been a while but it's been a busy Christmas New Year from which I am now emerging. During this time I have made the acquaintance of a new broker. He specialises in options and we've been doing put and call spreads on weekly XJO options. So far it seems to be working quite well.

This is a video that explains the strategy. It's similar but we're doing XJO options (not single stock), both positions are out-of-the-money and XJO options are European style.

One thing that he said that has struck a chord is the phrase "single stock shock". I would also extend that to "single sector shock" which is something that has burnt me in the past. With this in mind I have purchased two ETFs - IHD & STW, hopefully somewhere near the bottom of the market. The bonus being that they paid quarterly distributions in early January.

I had a little "single stock success" in December closing positions in RRL & MIN.

Anyway it's 2019 - hope everyone makes some money.

I am very bullish on a lot of the mid and large cap mining stocks at present simply due to the good health of their balance sheets and low forward earnings multiples. RIO, FMG, S32, WHC, RRL and CRN are all trading on modest PE’s with modest to no net debt levels and generating very strong cashflows. The whole trade war debate is potentially negative for commodities but despite all that concern, prices have held up reasonable well. We are also in a significantly weaker AUD/USD environment which adds further value to these mining companies and the dividends they are likely to payout. Most of these companies are also diverting capital to share buybacks at present which is a smart move in my opinion and a better move than overcapitalising on acquisitions and development with so much political instability happening around the world right now....Show more

ASX:RRL while the chart is not that strong, it is looking remarkably healthy in the current environment. I'm seriously considering adding to this one. ...Show more
